Berlin is the largest student city in Germany with just about 200,000 students and has a total of four universities, six technical colleges and more than 30 privately-run academies. The "Berlin University Alliance" of Freie Universität, Humboldt-Universität and Technische Universität was recognized as an Excellence Alliance.

With its internationally renowned technical colleges, Berlin is also the most popular location for science for foreign students: approx. 21 percent of the students come from abroad, most of them from China, Russia and the USA, among others. Women make up 51 percent of all students in Berlin.
