BEW Berliner Energie und Wärme GmbH
BEW Berliner Energie und Wärme has been a Berlin state-owned company since 2024. We supply 700,000 homes and around 8,000 other buildings in the capital with reliable and convenient climate-friendly district heating.
Locally produced heating and hot water reach households, businesses, schools, and hospitals via our district heating network, which spans more than 2,000 kilometers.
BEW operates one of Germany's largest interconnected cooling networks in the center of Berlin. The cooling plant on Stresemannstraße supplies around 12,000 offices, 1,000 apartments, and numerous cultural institutions around Potsdamer Platz with locally generated district cooling. In line with Berlin's climate targets, the cooling center generates not only cooling but also climate-neutral heat.
As the operator of Berlin's largest district heating system, our most important commitment is to decarbonize our heat generation by 2045 while ensuring a secure supply for our customers. To this end, we are launching 30 projects at seven power plant sites. We rely on a broad mix of technologies and fuels: unavoidable waste heat from data centers, power-to-heat, large-scale heat pumps, and thermal storage systems – complemented by the future integration of geothermal energy and hydrogen.
