Universities in Berlin


The four universities and the Charité Medical University are the embodiment of Berlin’s science and educate young scientists in the city: more than 124,000 students are enrolled at these institutions.

Since 2019 the Berlin University Alliance (BUA) has been funded by the federal and state governments as an excellence alliance within the framework of the excellence strategy. A panel of experts, largely made up of the German Science Council and the German Research Foundation (DFG), selected the Berlin University Association. This includes the Technische Universität Berlin, the Freie Universität Berlin and the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin with the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. The interdisciplinary research projects of the network will be funded with up to ten million euros per project annually until 2026.

Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin)

Roughly 38,000 students are educated on the campus of Freie Universität Berlin in Dahlem in 173 degree courses. The university offers a wide range of courses in the humanities and social sciences as well as a broad selection in the natural and life sciences. The Freie Universität Berlin is one of the strongest research universities in Germany and with five liaison offices worldwide is very international.

Freie Universität was awarded prizes in the Excellence Initiative in 2007 and 2012 for its future concept "Veritas - Iustitia - Libertas International Network University" and thus became the first university in Berlin to achieve excellence status. In the follow-up competition Excellence Strategy, it is the spokesperson university for the clusters Contestations of the Liberal Script (SCRIPTS) and Temporal Communities – Doing Literature in a Global Perspective as well as the spokesperson for the cluster MATH+ together with Humboldt-Universität and Technische Universität Berlin. Freie Universität is also involved in the NeuroCure and Matters of Activity clusters of excellence: Image Space Material.

Humboldt University of Berlin (HU Berlin)

At the Humboldt University, the oldest of Berlin's universities, about 36,000 students are enrolled in more than 170 degree programs. More than 500 professors teach and conduct research in the humanities, social and cultural sciences, mathematics and natural sciences, human medicine, and agricultural sciences.

In 2012, Humboldt-Universität received an award in the Excellence Initiative of the Federal Government and the Länder for its future concept "Education through Science: Personality - Openness - Orientation". In 2018, it successfully acquired the excellence cluster Matters of Activity: Image Space Material and is also involved in the clusters MATH+, NeuroCure, Unifying Systems in Catalysis (UniSysCat) and Science of Intelligence (SCIoI).

Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin)

The Technische Universität Berlin is the largest technical university in Germany with more than 35,000 students in about 140 courses of study and 400 professors. The specialist focus is on engineering and natural sciences, as well as planning, social, and economic sciences, and the humanities.

Scientific spin-offs and the promotion of entrepreneurship enjoy a long tradition at the Technische Universität Berlin. Today, the Technische Universität Berlin is one of the universities in Germany with the highest number of start-ups.

In the excellence strategy of the federal and state governments, the Technical University of Berlin recruited the cluster of excellence Unifying Systems in Catalysis (UniSysCat) and the cluster Science of Intelligence (SCIoI) cluster. It is also spokesperson for the MATH+ cluster together with the Humboldt University and the Free University of Berlin.

University of the Arts (Universität der Künste - UdK)

The UDK Berlin has about 4,000 students in the fields of music, visual arts and theater as well as architecture, design, visual communication and social and economic communication.

Charité Medical University

The Charité is a joint institution formed by the FU Berlin and the HU Berlin. It is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe, where some of the world's best doctors and scientists treat patients, conduct research and teach new doctors at the highest professional level. More than 9,000 students are matriculated at the Charité Medical University currently. The Charité is recognized globally for excellence in teaching.

The NeuroCure cluster of excellence from the excellence strategy is located at the Charité. The institution is also involved in other clusters. Scientists at the Charité are also involved in research projects that are not specifically medical, such as the UniSysCat cluster of excellence.
