Transport, mobility and logistics
With the concept of intelligent networking of the various modes of transport, the capital region is promoting economical and environmentally friendly solutions.
New markets are emerging as demand for innovative products and services grows. Berlin connects Western and Eastern Europe. The capital is one of the most dynamic economic regions in Europe.
In Berlin, ideas are conceived and put into practice to ensure that mobility remains both environmentally friendly and cost-effective in the future. Global companies and startups form a network with universities and innovative research consortia, as well as system providers, suppliers, and service providers.
Automotive and automotive supplier industry
Its proximity to leading automotive manufacturers, numerous test fields for new and intelligent mobility, and the supportive transformation network of the automotive and supplier industry, ReTraNetz-BB, make the region an important market and partner for the automotive industry.
Berlin is the only location in Germany with a significant presence of the three leading German manufacturers BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen. Tesla manufactures exclusively electric vehicles just outside Berlin and markets them worldwide as “made in Berlin.” The Berlin site offers a unique combination of excellent R&D activities and high-quality production.
New mobility concepts
Berlin's strong digital economy is the reason why the big names in the automotive industry are coming together here with startups to develop projects and new ideas for electric mobility and software-defined vehicles. Important topics include artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, and automated driving.
These technologies can fundamentally change traffic in cities. Berlin offers excellent conditions for testing new concepts, e.g., in the field of electric mobility logistics, networked micromobility with new small vehicles, or innovative charging technologies.
Since 2010, the Berlin Agency for Electromobility (eMO) has been supporting the mobility transition in the capital region as a central contact and coordination point, helping to implement best practice solutions in a sustainable manner.
Aerospace Center Berlin
The aerospace industry is a key industry in the Berlin-Brandenburg capital region. Berlin Adlershof is increasingly becoming a space industry hub: Small satellites (primarily involving space technology and precision engineering) are produced here, whose sensor systems provide valuable data used in numerous civilian and military applications. Startups in the "NewSpace" sector, such as Neurospace and liveEO, are growing rapidly and driving the development of a space industry ecosystem. At the same time, the aviation industry is also gaining momentum, particularly in the area of energy-efficient flying.
Logistics Center
Berlin offers optimal conditions for logistics companies operating nationally and internationally: five freight villages (GZV) with comprehensive infrastructure, a very well-developed rail network, and inland waterways.
With the Technical University, Berlin is home to one of Europe’s largest centers of education and research in the field of logistics, complemented by leading companies that develop and market a wide range of logistics and telematics services globally.
Rail technology from Berlin
Berlin is world-renowned as a traditional hub for railway technology. The industry is a cornerstone of the region's economy and is one of its largest industrial employers. From medium-sized suppliers to large corporations, all segments of the value chain are represented.
The region is home to numerous major companies in the rail technology sector, including Alstom, Siemens Mobility, Thales Transportation, Stadler Deutschland, Knorr-Bremse, and Elpro Verkehrstechnik.
Intelligent transport systems
Established and specialized companies in the field of intelligent transport systems such as IVU Traffic Technologies, Luxoft, and Mbition are developing innovative hardware and software solutions in the capital that address the key components of modern mobility concepts.
