Battery technologies
The capital region is one of the leading locations for R&D, production and applications of battery technologies.
Storage technologies are essential for the energy and mobility transition – which is why the State of Berlin is giving high priority to building a strong economic ecosystem for battery technologies. It supports investments in battery cell production as well as in upstream and downstream processes in the value chain.
International companies, such as BASF and Microvast, are already developing and producing battery materials and systems in the region. The Canadian company Rock Tech Lithium has been based in Brandenburg since 2023 and plans to commission its lithium converter plant in 2025 and start producing lithium hydroxide in early 2026.

Innovative companies
An innovation ecosystem has emerged in Berlin-Brandenburg in which companies benefit from each other and work together on future-oriented projects.
The battery value chain is wide-ranging. It ranges from raw materials and material development to processing technology, cathode production, cell production and module production. Test procedures, diverse applications and marketing, including second life and recycling, round off the spectrum. There is a wide range of know-how available in the region’s companies and institutes.
