With the administrative reform in 2001, the new Mitte district was formed from the three old districts Mitte, Tiergarten, and Wedding. Mitte is simultaneously a metropolis and a neighborhood, a cosmopolitan city and a place to live. Its six districts include the Bundestag, government buildings, and embassies as well as a residential district, gastronomy, and with the large Tiergarten, the so-called green lung of Berlin.

Commercial districts in Mitte

Martinikenfelde

Located in the west of Mitte, bordering the district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. The 32-hectare site was for a long time used by processing industry firms. In addition to historical and some listed industrial buildings (by Peter Behrens and Alfred Grenander amongst others), there are industrial and commercial buildings originating from almost every decade of the 20th Century.

Technology Park Berlin-Humboldthain

The TPH is located in the center of Berlin between Brunnenstrasse, Ackerstrasse and Volkspark Humboldthain. The 25-hectare business and science location combines tradition and future: The former AEG factories and adjoining high-tech buildings offer space for production and technology-oriented companies as well as for the creative scene.

The location is characterized by the close exchange between science and industry. Currently, around 150 companies and approximately 22 research institutions have chosen the Technology Park Humboldthain (TPH) as the base for their entrepreneurial activities.

[WeiberWirtschaft center for female entrepreneurs]

The former East German state-run cosmetics manufacturing complex has been transformed into a modern center for startups following thorough modernisation and renovation work. New standards have been set through the combined use of modern, environmentally-friendly procedures and technologies. The center for female entrepreneurs was responsible for Berlin's first environmentally friendly renovation of a trading estate.
