Tourism industry in the capital region
With its central location in Europe, the city offers companies in the tourism industry outstanding potential for development.
After pandemic-related restrictions in previous years, tourism in 2022 recovered significantly from the previous year. With 10.4 million guests, twice as many visitors came to Berlin as in 2021 and, with 26.5 million overnight stays, booked 90 percent more overnight stays than in the previous year.
By January and February 2023, around 1.5 million guests had already visited the German capital, 34 percent of whom came from abroad. That was 140 percent more than in the previous year. The increase in domestic visitors was 89 percent higher than in the previous year, with over 980,000 visitors. A total of almost 3.6 million overnight stays were booked during the same period.
The figures are still a far cry from 2019, when a record result of over 34 million overnight stays was achieved. However, tourism in the German capital is recovering faster than in other metropolises, and the current trend shows: Trips are going back to Berlin!

Sustainable destination Berlin
Berlin ranks sixth among the world’s most sustainable cities in the “Global Destination Sustainability Index 2023”, the most important international sustainability ranking for the tourism and events industry. The sustainability index evaluates ecological, social and economic criteria in large cities with more than 1.5 million inhabitants. The result confirms the German capital’s commitment to becoming one of the most climate-friendly and livable destinations in Europe.
