Until the corona year 2020, Berlin was able to look forward to a rapid increase in the number of people in employment. Its positive development was above the national average for years. The clear upward trend of employment subject to social insurance contributions was particularly pleasing. While the number of people in employment rose by 2.2% in 2019, it fell in 2020 by -0.4% (Germany -1.1%). In a comparison of the federal states, Berlin recorded the smallest decline here.
But the labor market proved to be robust and confirmed the forecasts. In 2021, the number of people in employment in Berlin increased by 0.9 percent to more than 2 million compared to the previous year. There were over 18,000 more people in employment than in 2020. Thus, Berlin has the highest percentage increase of all federal states.
