Berlin can be pleased about a clear upward trend in the labor market: The number of employed persons increased by 3.4 percent compared to the previous year to more than 2.1 million in 2022. That was around 70,000 more people than the average for 2021. As in the years before Corona, Berlin has the highest percentage increase of all Federal states. The nationwide average was +1.3 percent. Compared to the pre-crisis level of 2019, about 89,200 more people (+4.3 percent) were employed.

The service sectors in particular contributed to growth in 2022, with an increase of 3.8 percent. While the high growth rates are partly due to the recovery from the pandemic-related decline, growth in many service sectors exceeds pre-crisis levels. The manufacturing sector proved robust overall with an increase of 0.8 percent (0.4 percent nationwide), while the processing sector posted a 0.1 percent rise.
