Electricity, Gas and heating supply in Berlin

With an energy carrier mix of wind and water power, solar energy, biomass, natural gas and coal, electricity companies in Berlin are designing a climate-neutral capital. In order to increase the quality of life in the city in an environmentally friendly manner free of fossil fuels, they are developing innovative supply solutions. Berlin makes an active contribution to the energy revolution. Climate protection partners between energy suppliers and the state of Berlin are helping to try and achieve the target of climate-neutrality by 2050 and phasing out coal by 2030 at the latest.

The basic supplier for electricity in Berlin is Vattenfall, and GASAG AG ensures the basic supply of gas.

Water supply and sewage disposal

The drinking water supply and sewage disposal of around 3.7 million Berliners is undertaken by Berliner Wasserbetriebe (BWB), one of the largest water services companies in this area in Germany.

Berlin households, industries and businesses consume on average more than 600,000 cubic metres of fresh drinking water each day. By contrast, the BWB can provide about 1 million cubic metres per day. Supply shortages are avoided by high production capacity.

In dry weather, the BWB’s six sewage treatment plants treat around 700,000 cubic metres of wastewater per day. For several years, the BWB has been intensively researching new techniques for treating wastewater more intensively to meet the high requirements of Berlin sewage treatment using innovative know-how.

Berliner Regenwasseragentur

The Berliner Regenwasseragentur has devoted itself to the sensible and climate-friendly treatment of rainwater, founded in 2018 by the state of Berlin and the BWB. Businesses which use rainwater on site create a better city climate, healthier groundwater, less risk of flooding and more greenery. The Berliner Regenwasseragentur helps to use rainwater as a resource. With the GründachPLUS programme, the state of Berlin is helping existing buildings to go green. The Berliner Regenwasseragentur offers initial consultations.
