Vattenfall Wärme Berlin AG

Vattenfall Wärme Berlin AG

Vattenfall Wärme Berlin is the heating partner for Berlin, its neighbourhoods and people. We offer environmentally friendly energy from a single source - from generation to distribution to the customer. Our forward-looking heating solutions are one hundred percent local. We are advancing the urban heat transition and supporting the growing city of Berlin on its path to climate neutrality.

In a joint climate protection agreement with the state of Berlin, we have committed to halving the CO2 emissions generated in the course of our production by 2020. We already managed to achieve this goal ahead of schedule in 2017. Together with the state of Berlin, we are shaping the coal phase-out to be achieved by 2030 at the latest.

The complete transformation of our Berlin generation portfolio is necessary for this ambitious goal. Our generation plants today are being replaced or supplemented by climate-friendly alternatives. This includes waste heat, biomass, natural gas, power-to-heat, large heat pumps and heat storage.

When we invest in new, highly efficient combined heat and power plants (CHP), we already consider their technical suitability for the use of hydrogen.

Furthermore, CHP plants are complemented by technologies such as "power-to-heat" with the aim of bringing more renewable energies into urban heating. Heat storage systems complement this smart combination. Other examples on the way to CO2-neutral generation include the use of industrial waste heat that flows into the city heating system, for example from the Berlin porcelain manufactory KPM. Or the integration of solar thermal energy. We continue to rely on large heat pumps. One is already in operation at the Buch thermal power station and another is under construction in our cooling center at Potsdamer Platz.

Together, we are moving Berlin forward when it comes to a climate-friendly and reliable urban heating supply.
