The health care industry is one of the major economic sectors of the capital region, employing one out of eight Berliners.
The 278 medical technology companies and about 200 biotechnology companies, 23 pharmaceuticals manufacturers and 79 hospitals of the capital have made it the premier location for life sciences in all of Germany. Approximately 350,000 people working in the Capital region health care industry. To name but a few, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Bausch & Lomb, B. Braun Melsungen, Berlin-Chemie, Biotronik and Sanofi-Aventis all have their registered offices in Berlin.
Why Berlin?
"We relocated our offices to Berlin because we were looking to cooperate more closely with people, and I don't mean just at the political level. Here, we have established many interesting contacts within the various scientific institutions, hospitals like the Charité and various biotech companies. I am confident that in future, we will be able to attract even more world-class scientific research to Berlin."
Dr. Andreas Penk, Chairman of the Management Board, Pfizer Deutschland GmbH
When Pfizer Germany relocated its headquarters to Berlin, this was further proof that the city has regained its economic and strategic significance.
Forecasts indicate that in 2030, the approximately 368,000 employees of this sector will generate a gross value added of around EUR 20 billion.
In fact, Berlin’s 24 large research institutes and university departments focusing on life sciences make the capital a unique place to be, for anyone in the field – nowhere else in Europe is such a concentration to be found in such close proximity. The players here include internationally renowned institutions such as the largest university hospital of Europe, the Charité; the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC); and the German Heart Institute Berlin (DHZB).
What attracts these companies to Berlin is the exceptional potential for development and cooperation, characterized in particular by direct access to academic and scientific institutions. The long-standing networks and research groups of the region promote the growth and development processes of individual companies.
