Steglitz-Zehlendorf: As large and varied as a midsized city; a district with a good quality of life.
The district comprises the following areas: Wannsee, Dahlem, Nikolassee, Zehlendorf, Lankwitz, Lichterfelde, Steglitz, and Südende.
Thanks to excellent motorway and suburban railway (S-Bahn) links you can reach the city center or the countryside surrounding Berlin in a matter of minutes.
The district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf, also known as a "green district" has a total of 853 hectares of recreational space including 745 hectares of green areas.
Apart from this there are a further 2,448 hectares of woodland, including the Grunewald and Düppel forests, and 1,127 hectares of wetland, including the Kleine Wannsee, Große Wannsee, Schlachtensee, and Krumme Lanke lakes.
The region’s unmistakable profile is reflected in a multitude of science and research institutes, attractive shopping streets, traditional quarters, and a high concentration of tourist attractions.
Attractive surroundings:
- Otto Lilienthal Memorial
- Titania Kinopalast cinema
- Gutshaus Steglitz, one of the last vestiges of Prussian early classicist architecture
- Klein-Glienicke castle and gardens, featured on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
- The Botanical Gardens, including the "Grosse Tropenhaus", the world's tallest greenhouse, at 25m in height. Spanning a total area of 42 hectares and housing some 18,000 species of plants, this is the largest facility of its kind in Germany.
Schlossstrasse is the district's longest shopping street, stretching more than two kilometers.
Berlin's most modern shopping mall - "Das Schloss" - opened on Schlossstrasse in the spring of 2006.
Impressive figures: "Das Schloss" has a total of 36,000 m² of retail space, a 12,000 m² service area, and houses both three radio stations (rs.2, Berliner Rundfunk 91.4, and kiss.fm) and the district central library.
