With 550 recharging stations and an investment volume of 80 million Euros in electromobility projects, Berlin is already a showcase for e-mobility and a leader in innovation.

Numerous companies and research institutions are developing and testing the vehicles of tomorrow in Berlin. Joint field tests by the major German automakers BMW, Daimler, and VW with the electricity providers Vattenfall, RWE, and E.ON have made Berlin a model city for electric mobility within Germany.

Berlin has the most densely concentrated network of recharging stations in Germany. A total of 80 million Euros has been invested in research projects currently investigating e-mobility in Berlin, more than in any other region of Germany.

Berlin offers the best conditions for organizations involved in all aspects of electromobility, from research and development to large-scale testing and industrial production of components.

Model Projects in the Capital Region

Daimler and RWE are currently testing 120 electric Smart Cars, while BMW and Vattenfall are working with 100 electric Minis. Deutsche Bahn is testing car-sharing schemes with electric and hybrid vehicles.

Daimler will begin construction of electric engines in Berlin-Marienfelde in 2012. BAE and Continental are researching new battery technologies. Electric motorcycles are being developed. The Berlin firm DMB Energy has constructed a battery powering an Audi A2 on a nonstop 605 kilometer journey from Munich to Berlin - a world record.

With the founding of the eMO Agency for Electromobility in Berlin (eMO-Agentur für Elektromobilität in Berlin) in November of 2010, Berlin has been consistently building on advantages as a location and betting on clean technologies. eMO will create a network of all the relevant stakeholders in the field of mobility and help coordinate their efforts.
