The pharmaceutical industry is the heavyweight among the players in the Berlin chemical industry, as well as the core sector of the Berlin industrial economy.

In 2009, Berlin’s 23 pharmaceutical companies generated sales of EUR 5.5 billion.  This corresponds to 92 percent of the turnover achieved by the chemicals sector in the German capital.  One out of ten of the 9,500 industry jobs is with one of the pharmaceuticals, which generate roughly a third of the export turnover of the overall Berlin industry.
