The approximately 700 companies that make up Berlin's food, beverage and tobacco industry employ over 11,000 people. The number of people working in the industry increased by about 3.3 percent between 2007 and 2008. Thus, it is a pillar of Berlin's manufacturing sector and an important employer in the city.

  • Tobacco processing: 1,706 employees,
  • Meat processing: 800 employees,
  • Coffee and tea processing: 600 employees.
The annual turnover generated by the food and tobacco industry is about 11 billion euros, and the share of goods produced for export is currently about 17 percent.

The products of nationally and internationally known brands like Coca-Cola, Schultheiss, Kühne, Storck, Stollwerck and Bahlsen are made in Berlin. Fassbender & Rausch is now the world's largest chocolatier.

The region's food and beverage companies can take advantage of the networking and partnership opportunities initiated by the Agricultural Marketing Association "pro agro" . The association works to promote sales of agricultural and food-industry products and help producers establish new products on the market for the long term.
The Brandenburg Food Network (Brandenburger ErnährungsNetzwerk - BEN) also contributes to networking and integration within the industry. BEN is committed to improving the competitiveness, marketing and communication of the regional food and beverage industry. It also promotes cooperative product development and quality assurance as well as the economic integration of the region's food industry.
