Biogas
A biogas plant in Rathenow is the first of 15 facilities for feeding biogas into the natural gas network that GASAG Berliner Gaswerke AG and its subsidiary Erdgas Mark Brandenburg GmbH plan to build by 2015. GASAG has been supplying its customers in Berlin with a 10 percent biogas/natural gas mixture since October 2009.
Biofuels
In Schwedt, Brandenburg, Verbio operates a Bioethanol plant with a production capacity of 200,000 tons per year. In 2010, the plant was converted into a bio-refinery with a capacity of 30MW, which will be expanded to 75MW by 2013.
There are seven bioethanol gas stations in Berlin.
Biomass
In Königs Wusterhausen MVV Energie AG operates a biomass plant with an electrical output of 160,000 MWh/a. 130,000 t/a of waste timber are burned there as fuel.
In Berlin-Rudow, a biomass heating plant operated by RWE Innogy Cogen GmbH has supplied the Gropiusstadt housing district with heat since 2003.
