Among the German Federal Länder, Berlin ranks just behind Bavaria and is neck-and-neck with Hamburg in terms of the concentration of environmental technology companies, research institutions, and number of employees. The city is home to firms producing components serving the generation and distribution of power as well as to research and development institutions active in the field of energy technology. Many of the top energy firms are present in Berlin and between them, they offer a broad spectrum of energy-related services.
Of the 10,500 companies with operations in Germany listed in the Database of Environmental Technology Companies (Umweltfirmen-Informationssystem - UMFIS) maintained by the German Chambers of Industry and Commerce, over 450 are in Berlin.
