Berlin is at the same time the capital of the reunited Germany and a constitutional state of the Federal Republic of Germany. Geographically, the city-state Berlin is surrounded by the state of Brandenburg.
Due to the addition of the new Eastern EU-countries, Berlin now finds itself in the geographical centre of this expanded Europe. Today the region is the location for cooperation between East and West.
