The Market for Transportation Logistics and Transportation Telematics
According to a survey by the Transport Technology Systems Network (Forschungs- und Anwendungsverbund Verkehrssystemtechnik Berlin - FAV), a center of competence operated by the Berlin Technology Foundation (Technologiestiftung Berlin - TSB), about 80 companies and 20 research institutions are currently active in the field of transportation telematics in Berlin. Together, they employ a total of 4,500 people working in telematics-related fields.
Their activities range from software development to the production of hardware to the integration of complex transportation telematics systems.
On the corporate side, the major global systems providers like Siemens and Gedas Telematics are complemented by about 70 innovative small and mid-sized companies, each of which contributes specific competencies. Some of these smaller providers, such as IVU Traffic Technologies AG, enjoy an international reputation.

Transportation Centers in the Region
Schönefeld Airport is particularly suited for freight transportation. One reason for this is the diversity of destinations across the world served by Berlin-Schönefeld. That is why the Aircargo meeting on the topic of "Eastward EU Expansion" was held at Berlin-Schönefeld Airport in 2004. Construction is underway to convert Schönefeld Airport into the capital's new international airport, Berlin Brandenburg Airport, by 2011. Initially, the new airport will have a capacity of 22 million passengers per year, which will later be expanded. A six-track train station with local and long-distance lines is being built underneath the airport. Three business parks are planned for the periphery of the airport area.
Berlin Traffic Management Center (Verkehrsmanagementzentrale Berlin - VMZ)
The traffic management center
The center provides a broad range of mobility services and an overview of current traffic conditions via the Internet and 22 dynamic displays across the city.
The traffic management center's goals are:
The traffic management center's goals are:
- Avoid traffic jams and bottlenecks through intelligent integration of public transit and private transport;
- Improve the travel experience in the Berlin region;
- Provide business and industry in the region a competitive advantage;
- Facilitate transportation planning and management for authorities in Berlin;
- Protect the environment and natural resources by promoting efficient use of Berlin's transportation system;
- Provide free mobility services for all users of Berlin's transportation system.
In addition to the free services it provides, the center also develops special services for commercial transport.

1. Freight haulage center Berlin West
The Berlin West freight haulage center is located on the western Autobahn beltway A 10 and includes the sub-sections Wustermark and Brieselang.
The project developer Infrastruktur- und Projektentwicklungsgesellschaft mbH creates the infrastructure for the Wustermark subsection and markets it on behalf of the Brandenburg Land Development Corporation (Landesentwicklungsgesellschaft - LEG) as a trustee for the municipality.
WestLB bank and Fiege Deutschland perform the same role for Brieselang. This public private partnership serves to consolidate competencies and create synergy effects.
2. Freight haulage center Berlin Ost
Direct connections to the Eastern Berlin Autobahn beltway and the rail line connecting Berlin, Frankfurt an der Oder, Warsaw and Moscow are the key features of the Berlin Ost freight haulage center in Freienbrink.
It offers numerous advantages including attractive property prices and special subsidy programs for logistics companies.
3. Freight haulage center Berlin Süd
At the doorstep of Germany's capital, the Berlin Süd freight haulage center in Grossbeeren has become an important logistics hub.
Where rail lines and roadways intersect, in the prosperous southern section of the city, a number of big names in the industry have already established locations.

Air freight center at Berlin Schönefeld Airport (Luftfrachtzentrum Flughafen Berlin Schönefeld)
The center offers ideal conditions for intermodal transfers between road, rail and air. Open around the clock, the airport is ideally suited for express services and chartered cargo aircraft.
Major Developments in the Region
Major projects pursued by the Transport Technology Systems Network (Forschungs- und Anwendungsverbund Verkehrssystemtechnik Berlin - FAV)
in the field of transportation and mobility research:
Cooperative systems for intelligent road safety (Coopers, Kooperative System für intelligente Strassenverkehrssicherheit)
This project, underway since January 2006, is based on the transmission of data between vehicles and infrastructure systems in order to establish door-to-door traffic management and safety services.
The project partners include: FAV, Fraunhofer (FIRST), Technical University of Berlin and the Technical University of Applied Sciences Wildau.
European Rail Research Network of Excellence (EURNEX)
This network receives support from the Sixth EU Framework Program for Research and works to integrate Europe's fragmented rail transportation research activities in order to increase efficiency. A single European market for rail research is to be established.
Intelligent Integration of Railway Systems (InteGRail)
This EU-funded project is developing an information system that will link existing railroad communications systems and facilitate the integration of all relevant sub-systems.
INTRASEA
This inter-regional project coordinates the environmentally-friendly planning, development and expansion of the infrastructure of inland waterways, which are seeing increasing use for both tourism and industrial purposes.
MODTRAIN
This project is the largest joint European rail technology initiative and works to make the next generation of high-speed trains and universal locomotives cheaper to produce and operate.
TELLUS
Under the aegis of the EU's CIVITAS initiative, this project works to make urban transportation more sustainable and reduce its impact on the environment through various political and technological measures.
The first Telematics Service Center in Brandenburg was established in Lauchhammer. The TSC Niederlausitz will primarily work to facilitate the local economy's transition into the modern information society.
Hasso-Plattner-Institute
Five years after beginning its teaching and research activities, the Hasso Plattner Institute for Software Systems Technology is planning a massive expansion. The institute will place a new focus on telematics research and education.
