The region's aerospace industry is distinguished by a high level of productivity, two-digit revenue growth, and a high proportion of research and development.
Why Berlin?
"Berlin is an ideal location for an innovative software company in the aviation industry. Qualified engineers, computer scientists and mathematicians are relatively easy to find thanks to the high concentration of educational institutions and the overall attractiveness of the city as a place to live. At the same time, the concentration of universities and research institutions creates an ideal environment for a high-performance network that links research and industry. Public subsidies and incentives for technology such as those provided by the Zukunftsfonds Berlin promote the development of innovative products."
Dr.-Ing. Oliver Kranz, managing director of PACE Aerospace Engineering and Information Technology GmbH
The region's core competencies are propulsion technology, maintenance, overhaul and repair, and know-how related to the production and marketing of small aircraft.
Berlin-Brandenburg Airport in Schönefeld is the region's largest current infrastructure project. Berlin has the potential to grow into Germany's third largest aerospace center, after Bavaria and Hamburg/Northwest Germany over the next ten years.
The capital region is actually the birthplace of German aviation. It has tapped into this tradition and become a center for the development of aviation technology in Germany today.
- Special competency in the development and production of propulsion systems and modules, satellite technology and aerospace-oriented process engineering;
- Far-reaching network of operators, three international airports;
- Decision to make Schönefeld the site of Berlin's only airport after 2011 (Berlin Brandenburg Airport);
- Investment of approximately 2 billion euros during the planning and construction phase;
- Anticipated initial capacity of approximately 22 million passengers per year;
- The total employment impact will be about 73,000 jobs by 2012; - The aerospace sector in the region earns a total turnover of about 1 billion euros annually;
- The regional stakeholders in the aviation and aerospace industries have an exceptionally efficient network in the Berlin-Brandenburg Aerospace Allianz e.V
; - Subsidies and incentives for capital investments, employee training, and research and development projects;
- ILA
– The leading aviation and aerospace trade fair in Berlin-Brandenburg
- 1014 exhibitors from 42 countries, over 115,000 industry visitors and 250,000 total visitors including the general public ; - Outstanding pool of highly qualified technical specialists and management talent.
Aerospace Industry in Berlin
- The capital region should establish itself as center of competence for propulsion systems and satellite technology;
- The region should command a leading position in aerospace-oriented process engineering that serves the entire value-creation chain;
- The regional aerospace industry should benefit from contracts in connection with the European satellite navigation system, Galileo.
The Master Plan describes four discrete phases of development:
Phase 2 (through 2008)
"Develop Strengths"
This phase called for targeted support for the industry anchor companies already based in the region while also attracting further major corporations. It also initiated partnerships between the anchor companies and small to mid-sized companies, universities and research institutes.
Phase 4 (through 2015 and beyond)
"Exploit Synergies"
A robust, cross-industry cluster has emerged and new products and services are opening up new business opportunities. The universities in the region have enhanced their profile in disciplines related to the aerospace sector and established close links to the regional industry.
