The aerospace industry is one of the capital region's most important future industries. It combines a high level of innovation with sophisticated technology. The region is home to companies that are respected across the world such as the global players MTU and Rolls-Royce. Their presence offers small and mid-sized companies a whole range of business opportunities as suppliers or service providers in areas including security and IT. The region's aerospace industry is distinguished by a high level of productivity, two-digit revenue growth, and a high proportion of research and development. Why Berlin?
"Berlin is an ideal location for an innovative software company in the aviation industry. Qualified engineers, computer scientists and mathematicians are relatively easy to find thanks to the high concentration of educational institutions and the overall attractiveness of the city as a place to live. At the same time, the concentration of universities and research institutions creates an ideal environment for a high-performance network that links research and industry. Public subsidies and incentives for technology such as those provided by the Zukunftsfonds Berlin promote the development of innovative products." Dr.-Ing. Oliver Kranz, managing director of PACE Aerospace Engineering and Information Technology GmbHAbout 150 companies in the aerospace industry (including suppliers) with about 16,000 employees have their headquarters in the capital region. Additionally, a large number of companies provides manufacturing-related services to the region's aerospace sector. The region's core competencies are propulsion technology, maintenance, overhaul and repair, and know-how related to the production and marketing of small aircraft. Berlin Brandenburg Airport in Schönefeld is the region's largest current infrastructure project. Berlin has the potential to grow into Germany's third largest aerospace center, after Bavaria and Hamburg/Northwest Germany over the next ten years. The capital region is actually the birthplace of German aviation. It has tapped into this tradition and become a center for the development of aviation technology in Germany today.
The "Vision 2015" concept for the aerospace industry in Berlin is predicated on building regional strengths and calls for a concentration on three objectives:
To reach these goals, the BBAA study "Aerospace in Berlin-Brandenburg: Core Competence - Vision-Strategy" (Luft- und Raumfahrt in Berlin-Brandenburg: Kernkompetenz – Vision – Strategie) has established a Master Plan describing how to create the conditions necessary for rapid growth of the region's aerospace industry.
The Master Plan describes four discrete phases of development:Phase 1 (through 2005) "Focus Energies - Provide Targeted Support" One focus was on the creation of sustainable structures for professional cluster management. This included consolidating all activities serving to develop and market the region as an aerospace location and facilitating deeper integration between companies in regional networks. Phase 2 (through 2008) "Develop Strengths" This phase called for targeted support for the industry anchor companies already based in the region while also attracting further major corporations. It also initiated partnerships between the anchor companies and small to mid-sized companies, universities and research institutes. Phase 3 (through 2011) "Gaining Competitive Advantage through Innovation" The continued integration of Berlin-Brandenburg's aerospace industry in regional networks will help overcome structural challenges. Strategic partnerships, the establishment of new companies and corporate branches, the creation of centers of competence and cooperation with other regions that have a strong aerospace industry will lead to a high level of innovation. This will boost revenue growth and job creation along the entire value creation chain and spur the development of new products and services. Phase 4 (through 2015 and beyond) "Exploit Synergies" The industry will also benefit from the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport
A robust, cross-industry cluster has emerged and new products and services are opening up new business opportunities. The universities in the region have enhanced their profile in disciplines related to the aerospace sector and established close links to the regional industry. |
