Why Berlin?

"In Berlin we certainly benefit from our proximity to the excelent scientific institutions of the city and the opportunity to cooperate with the many innovative companies here. At the same time, being in the capital region enables us to communicate with political decision makers. Berlin as the center of a newly expanded Europe is where international contacts are easy to find. Attractive workspaces at fair rents, very little red tape in dealing with the authorities and the magnetic pull of Berlin for potential employees – all of these factors have contributed to our company growing and becoming as successful as it did. Our decision to establish the company in Berlin has definitely paid off."

Dr. Arno Krotzky, Managing Director, metanomics GmbH&Co.KgaA

As a biotech region, Berlin ranks among the leaders in Europe, reports by Boston Consulting Group, A. T. Kearney and Biocom all agree. Roughly 200 biotech companies research and develop new products and processes, particularly in the field of red biotechnology. To name but a few examples, successful companies like Metanomics, Glycotope, Silence Therapeutics, Epigenomics, BioSilta, JPT Peptide Technologies, MOLOGEN, ProBioGen and caprotec bioanalyctics are all located in Berlin.

But there are other advantages, too. A strong group of closely networked, research-based pharmaceutical companies includes major international players like Pfizer, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Sanofi-Aventis, Berlin-Chemie (Menarini Group) and Dr. Mann Pharma/Bausch & Lomb.

The city is unique in Europe for its many independent research institutions working outside of a university context. Nowhere else is such variety to be found in such concentration, and nowhere else is research performed at such levels of excellence. Together, these institutes provide an exceptional platform for innovation, which is aided further by their close ties to partners in the industry.

Moreover, the capital’s over 79 hospitals and contract research organizations (CROs) provide excellent opportunities for collaborating on clinical studies.
