The German capital is one of the country’s major med-tech hubs with its more than 278 innovative companies in the sector.
Why Berlin?
“With its array of technologies, our company acts as a pioneer in the field of minimally invasive surgery. For more than 25 years, we have taken advantage of the city’s many hospitals, clinics, universities and research institutes as a testing ground for the development and use of our medical-technological devices.”
Peter P. Wiest, Chairman of the Board, W.O.M. World of Medicine AG
Biotronik, B. Braun Melsungen, Berlin Heart, Eckert und Ziegler and W.O.M World of Medicine are among the leading medical-technology companies making Berlin a vibrant center of the industry.
It is here, more than at other locations, that outstanding research is done in hospitals and at renowned research institutes such as the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine, the German Arthritis Research Center and the Institute for Micro- and Medical Technology at the Technical University Berlin (TU). Easy access to these leading cooperation partners is another plus for the region.
World-class medicine
Berlin traditionally has been a center of medical and medical-technical research and is home to several Nobel Prize winners, among them trailblazers like Robert Koch, Paul Ehrlich, Emil von Behring and Rudolf Virchow.
Charité University Hospital, where many renowned physicians and scientists have worked, celebrated the 300th anniversary of its founding in 2009.
As Europe’s largest university hospital, the Charité provides world-class medical care to its patients, who benefit from its collaboration with research institutions and research-based companies.
The German Heart Institute headed by Prof. Dr. Hetzer is the global leader in its field.
Attractive market – attractive location
Around 130 regional hospitals are located in the region - roughly 10% of all clinics in Germany. Add to that 33 preventive care facilities and rehabilitation clinics, 26,500 practicing physicians and 5,700 dentists. Companies like Berlin-Chemie use Berlin as a base for their operations on the markets of Eastern Europe.
