Berlin is the most important printing industry location in Germany alongside Hamburg, Frankfurt/Main, Stuttgart, and Munich. The Berlin book and press industry comprises local publishing houses, the printing industry, writers, journalists, and translators, was well as book, magazine, and newspaper retailers.
With 8,399 editions published, Berlin became the most important publishing city in Germany for the first time in 2006. In all about 300 companies operate as book and press publishing houses in Berlin (2006).
The local paper, publishing, and print industry employs some 13,100 people. The sector generated sales of EUR 3.7 billion in 2005.
