Why Berlin?

Dieter Kosslick, Director of the Berlin International Film Festival.

"The realities of contemporary Germany really come to light in Berlin-Brandenburg, so it’s a very fertile ground for the stories told by cinema. At the same time, the 300 international projects produced in Berlin each year show just how international the city's film industry has become."

Dieter Kosslick, Director of the Berlin International Film Festival

  • Above-average growth rates for the region’s television and film industry
  • Germany's top location for film, host to major international productions
  • The site of nearly a third of all German film and television productions
  • Optimal conditions for production and low costs
  • Germany's most important location for news production, which is gradually becoming a key player in Europe as well
  • Highest concentration of national and international radio and television broadcasters in Germany
  • Germany's most diverse radio landscape, with broadcasters transmitting on more than 40 analog and digital channels

The Berlinale has made Berlin the capital of cinema

The Berlinale is one of the top five film festivals in Europe. With roughly 500,000 tickets sold and 20,000 accredited professionals, it is also one of the world’s most popular festivals.
The Berlinale's public program includes over 350 films every year, mostly world or European premieres.
