Why Berlin?

Burkhard Ischler, Head of the Berlin office of Siemens AG

"Berlin's industrial and manufacturing sector provides a basis for innovation and drives it, too. In the most recent calculation, the sector’s share of the total expenditures for R&D in Berlin amounted to 80 percent. The metal, electrical and chemical industries accounted for a major share of that spending. […] Berlin's industrial and manufacturing sector also leads the nation in the share of staff devoted to R&D projects; 7.6% puts it in first place! Berlin's businesses invest nearly 1.5 billion euros in R&D annually. That corresponds to 1.9% of GDP. The German average is 1.7%."

Burkhard Ischler, Head of the Berlin office of Siemens AG

Berlin leads the ranking of German Länder in the study "Commitment to Research and Development in the Manufacturing Industry" (Forschungs- und Entwicklungseinsatz im Verarbeitenden Gewerbe) At 9.7%, the share of the total workforce engaged in R&D activities in Berlin exceeds the German average by 4.4 percentage points.
