The 3D city model data is maintained on a web server at the Business Location Center. Using Google Earth's web-streaming function, it is possible to access and visualize, on-demand, the enormous data volume contained in the model of Berlin.

The data remain the property and possession of the Land of Berlin and are not transferred in any way to Google Earth.
Modern encryption methods and digital rights management (DRM) prevent the unauthorized reconstruction of the source data and guarantee maximum data security.

The creation of the Google Earth Model was made possible largely through the use of technologies developed and implemented at the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam and its spin-off 3D Geo GmbH. Since 2009, the company Autodesk has further developed the technology as one of its products.
